On Monday, federal prosecutors announced that an Instagram influencer, Yanique Balbuena-Ulloa, had allegedly scammed more than $2 million from vulnerable and elderly individuals across the United States.
Ulloa, who identifies as a blogger and entrepreneur, allegedly ran multiple schemes in which she and several co-conspirators targeted vulnerable individuals in their 70s and 80s. The group posed as representatives of companies like Amazon and Microsoft and offered the victims “tech support services.”
In reality, Ulloa and her team would carry out a variety of frauds, such as charging for subscription services that the victims never used and falsely claiming that the victims owed money for such services. In some cases, Ulloa’s group falsely claimed that the victims’ computers were infected with viruses, and then used that claim to get money from the victims.
Unfortunately, it appears that Ulloa and her team were able to convince some of their victims to pay money by taking advantage of their loneliness. According to prosecutors, Ulloa and her team spent hours on the phone with the victims in order to build false relationships, and some victims were even convinced to travel to meet Ulloa and her team in person.
The investigation into Ulloa and her team is ongoing, and it appears that her team took advantage of hundreds of victims. Ulloa faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, and her legal team has yet to comment on the charges.
In the meantime, this case serves as an important reminder of the potential dangers of online scams, especially those targeting the elderly and vulnerable. Individuals of any age should remember to be vigilant and avoid giving out money or personal information to anyone they don’t know.
