On May 13th, another Instagram Live video featuring up and coming NBA star Ja Morant appeared online, and again showed his hand appearing to flash a gun.
The video, reportedly filmed from Morant’s vehicle around midnight, shows the Memphis Grizzlies player driving alongside two friends, while rapping casually with music playing in the background. At one point, Morant is seen lifting up his shirt, appearing to hold a gun tucked into his waistband.
The NBA have yet to provide comment on the situation, but this is not the first time Morant has been involved in a controversy like this. In April 2020, Morant posted a similar video on his Instagram which caused media outcry.
Many feel that Morant should not have to face sanction, given that in his native South Carolina, it is legal for citizens to carry a gun in public. Morant’s lawyer, Hal Hardin, has reportedly come to his defense, stating that in Morant’s own words, ‘On any given night in my city, there’s a thousand other kids doing the same thing I’m doing, driving and making music…only difference is I’m Ja Morant’.
Whilst other high-profile athletes have been heavily criticized and punished for similar acts, it will be interesting to see if the league takes a more lenient stance on the matter, given the legalities for gun possession in Morant’s country and his status as a rising NBA superstar.
